San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers

I was out for a walk in Golden Gate Park yesterday and decided to pop into the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers to see the special exhibit, Garden Railway: 1915 Pan Pacific, which celebrates the centennial of San Francisco historic world’s fair.  The exhibit is open until April 10th.

When I walked into the Lowland Tropics section of the Conservatory, my camera lens immediately became foggy from the humidity.  The plants were all so unique and beautiful.  There are many different types of orchids, trees and mosses throughout the four galleries.

The special Garden Railway exhibit is an enchanting display landscaped with hundreds of dwarf plants and several water features. Model trains wend their way through the festive fairgrounds, zipping past whimsical recreations of the fair’s most dazzling monuments and amusements, including the Tower of Jewels and Palace of Fine Arts. The grand world’s fair signaled to the world San Francisco’s recovery from the 1906 earthquake.

The detailed miniature replica of the Palace of Fine Arts brought back fond memories of my children feeding stale bread to the ducks swimming in the ponds.
