The season is ending for our foxglove, sadly, but what a season it was! Because we allow our foxgloves to linger and drop their seeds at the end of each growing season, we have more and more of these stately flowers each spring. I wanted to share some of my favorite foxglove moments from this spring.
I love the first sign of foxglove in early spring, as much as the moment when they are in full bloom.
Foxglove, which thrive in zones 4-10, prefer either full sun or partial sun, depending upon the temperature. (The hotter the temperature, the more shade these plants prefer). In the Napa Valley, I have them situated in full morning sun and partial sun in the afternoons and they’re very happy.
I have a variety of colors, from light pink to deep magenta. They create wonderful vertical interest in my border, growing to a height of about 6 feet. Their shape and color create a lovely show for the first four weeks of spring.
And the most wonderful news of all? Bees love foxglove!
