Part of the fun and personalization of gardening is planting vegetables that my family enjoys. My husband, for example, LOVES haricots vert (as do I). So, this year I planted four of these bush beans and we have been enjoying them all summer long.
There are a handful of tips for growing haricots vert. First, when planting the seeds in late spring, I always plant twice as many seeds as I need because snails will feast on the seedlings as they come up, before they have fully established – even with snail bait. (This is true for all beans). Second, the leaves and branches of bush beans in general are more fragile than pole beans, especially late in the summer, so it’s important to be careful with the plant when picking the beans, so you don’t break branches and future sources of your beans. Last, using a trellis helps support your bush. I like the 48″ circular cage or trellis, which seems to be all the plants need.
This is one bean that I can’t live without in my garden!
