Years ago I planted a Celeste fig tree for our Napa property and over the years it has matured into a beautiful medium-height rounded tree yielding the most delectable, sweet figs you have ever tasted (in my opinion).
I’ve since learned that these figs are called Ficus Carica or “Sugar Fig” as they are popularly called in the southern region of the United States. They have an “eye” at the bottom of the fruit which is extra small, which helps to keep insects out of the fruit.
All I know is that we wait all summer long for these figs to arrive at the end of August through September – and they have finally arrived. They have incredibly thin skins, so they don’t need to be peeled, and are wonderfully sweet.
This morning, I pulled out my new tripod ladder from Shed (if you want one, ask for Daniel), which I adore. I got up to the tippy top of the ladder and picked the most perfectly ripe figs which my husband and I enjoyed for our breakfast.
The great news is that there are many more figs which are still in their early phases, so we’ll be enjoying these figs for a few more weeks.
