Jonas Wood

While in St. Barth’s over the holidays, we discovered an exhibition of some of Jonas Wood’s floral paintings at the gallery at Eden Roc.  I wasn’t familiar with his work and instantly fell in love with his colorful depiction of flowers and plants.

Roberta Smith of the New York Times says his work bears similarity to works by Daniel Heidkamp, David Hockney, Henri Matisse, Edouard Vuillard and Alex Katz. I loved their color and wimsy.

Wood paints, uses photography and creates etchings, although all of his work at Eden Roc were paintings. According to the gallery, most of his work consists of domestic interiors, landscapes, still-life and sports scenes.

In an Architectural Digest story by Rebecca Bates, Wood claimed to paint and create new memories of his former residences: “I’m interested in exploring the spaces that I’ve inhabited and the psychological impact they’ve had on me and my memories of them…And then I can create a new memory of that space.” This makes sense in the context of his interest and educational background in psychology and art.

What beautiful paintings. Wouldn’t you just love to have one of these in your home?
