Kissing Ball

Today I made mistletoe (kissing) balls to deliver to a couple of friends.  My mother made these every Christmas when I was growing up.

For a little history, mistletoe is a parasitic plant that grows from the branches of a host tree. In ancient times, mistletoe was regarded as magical and has long been a part of winter celebrations. How mistletoe became associated with Christmas and kissing is a mystery. However, like many other holiday customs that have been passed down by many cultures and generations, mistletoe, Christmas and kissing are an American tradition. According to legend, one cannot refuse a kiss if he or she is caught under the mistletoe.

What you will need:

red or green ribbon (preferably with wire)

fresh mistletoe

floral oasis ball

floral pins

Soak the oasis ball in cold water for an hour.  Remove from water and let drain until the water does not drip when you pick up the ball.  Wrap the ribbon around the ball in one direction and pin to hold it in place.  Wrap another ribbon around the ball in the other direction and tie the ends together.  Do not cut the ends.  Begin cutting about 3 – 5″ pieces of mistletoe from the larger branches and pushing it into the oasis between the wrapped ribbon to fill the space.  When finished, tie a bow at the top of the oasis and hang from doorway or chandelier.  Happy kissing!

Mistletoe is toxic and should be kept away from children and pets.
