Guess what I discovered on Friday? Our first beans of the season! I couldn’t believe my eyes when I found beans ready to be picked – in May! I planted my seedlings over the first weekend of April and protected them from nibblers (squirrels, insects???) with netting and Critter Ridder, so I wouldn’t lose my first plants as in prior years. This is the earliest I’ve ever enjoyed green beans from my garden.
All of my plants had ripe beans ready on them – not just one. Empress, Provider, Kentucky Wonder, Climbing French and Ideal Market, all from heirloom seeds that I sourced from Seed Savers this year.

While all of my beans have matured nicely, my climbers are the most impressive at this moment. Their tendrils go nearly all the way to the top of my 8′ trellises already!
Look at the wonderful collection of green beans that we were able to share between four of us on Friday night. Ahhh….it’s bean season again!
