About a month ago, I planted some ‘Mammoth Melting’ climbing snow peas. I’ve been tending to them meticulously after I failed to grow them last year. (I planted them too late in the season and they didn’t like the heat. And, something “ate” them – I never figured out exactly what or who!). I was determined to have snow peas this spring, so I started a little earlier – and so far, so good.
About once a week, I take the new shoots and tie them to my trellises encouraging them to climb as high as possible. I’m not sure this is necessary but it seems that it will serve the plant well once all of the peas start coming in. I imagine that I am maximizing the sunlight exposure to the entire plant. Of course I have to be careful as the new tender shoots easily snap, so I choose the thicker part of the new shoots.
As with my other starters, I have barricaded my peas with bird netting, securing the netting with rocks around the perimeter of my raised bed. I am taking every precaution in order to have peas this spring!
