I don’t know about you, but “holes” in my flower bed drive me crazy. I like a fullness. And now is the perfect time to start filling in these holes, as the weather is cooling down. I went to two nurseries this weekend – Central Valley in St. Helena and Van Winden’s in Napa to shop around for plant material that would work in my border garden, which is generally in shades of yellow, white, apricot and blues/purples. I found several varieties of perennials that will work, despite the fact that it’s the end of the season in our nurseries. I arrived home with some blue and white salvias – Victoria Blue, Sally Fun and Blue Note, White Flame phlox and Blue Wonder nepeta that will work perfectly.
As a rule, I like to use very few plant varieties and repeat them over and over as I feel it creates a more relaxing visual experience. Despite the fact that these plant varieties are new entries to my border, I bought enough of them that they will have a presence in my garden. I also generally create wide swaths of plant material but every once in awhile there is a small patch like the one above where a a touch of Sally Fun salvia is just the right thing.
