Viburnum

What a difference two weeks makes! Two weekends ago our viburnum – Eastern snowball, Viburnum opulus ‘Sterile’ (pictured above) and Viburnum plicatumvar tomentosum ‘Mariesii’ (pictured below) were nearly at their peak. (Yes – I took these pictures two weekends ago!). These beautiful shrubs mark the arrival of spring with their bold presence in our borders.

This afternoon I arrived and was shocked to see that they are almost finished! It was the combination of the warm days and the rain we’ve had in Northern California. Even with perfect conditions, I am always lucky to have but one month with these beauties.

I’m always a little sad when they retire for the year. Surely plants with flowers this beautiful should last just a little bit longer…
